It is evident that socially constructed ideas of how the body should look greatly affect the mentality and well-being of women. Mass media depictions of ‘supposed’ femininity act to oppress females, both young and old in an attempt to keep the audience in tune and ‘tuned-in’ to what is acceptable and not acceptable in today’s society. The sudden influx of fitness participation and ‘healthy eating’, a common euphemism for “dieting”, can be attributed to the increased demand of western culture’s slenderness ideal by the media and fitness-based corporations. Most companies swarm the consumer and create new fitness-oriented demographics as a means of profit. Although such guidelines govern their bodies, ideologies dictating the physical form are not exclusive to females. Males, too, are increasingly being led to believe that they must live up to certain standards of masculine appearance. Once these paradigms are addressed and studied, for both sexes, in greater detail, society will be able to solve the advancement of clinical eating disorders and body dissatisfaction. Until then, the minds, in addition to the bodies, of present and future generations will continually degenerate and be at stake.
