razorblade apples

so it's hallowe'en. i really thought it was tomorrow nite. all this studying and reading has me lacking an awareness of time and space. pretty messed up.

so as notorious b.i.g. asked on his last album...what's beef?

today's beef is tender. nonetheless, it's beef. as i sit here in i front of my t.v. and on my laptop, im obliged every few minutes to hand out candy to the kids around my block. what's the problem, you ask?

a lot of these kids don't even say "trick or treat" anymore. some of them just come up with their bags open expecting me, like some kind of robot, to just get the candy from my basket and drop it into their loot bag. ha. the last kid came up to my doorstep with his hands opened. not one to mess around with or scar kids, i gave the youngster his candy and let him be.

that's my beef. that's all. whats happening to the kids?

anyhow, looking back at hallowe'ens of the past, i remember smashing pumpkins, egging a house or two, not dressing up during grade 8 and still trick or treating. who does that? it's my sweet tooth that compelled me..had to be.

5 favourite treats
1. m&m's
2. skittles
3. rockets/sweet tarts
4. chips/doritos
5. coffee crisp

13 bad things
1. ghost and/or devil-based horror movies (i still shit myself whether or not theyre watched on hallowe'en)
2. perverts on the ill-lit streets offering kids "treats" - whether in their pants or from their car
3. poisonous/razor blade candies
4. opened candies
5. egged houses, cars and people (i admit, im guilty of the first)
6. the ol' poo in a burning bag on the doorstep trick
7. old school costumes of my generation (particularly those plastic masks with poor ventilation and rubber band back-of-the-head straps. so much for safety.)
8. houses that don't give candy or celebrate hallowe'en (assholes..excuse me...cheap assholes)
9. rain, sleet and snow (dear God, kids aren't postal workers)
10. pennies instead of candy as a treat (who ever thought that was cool? if you thought candy was bad for your teeth..try chewing copper)
11. old kids that don't dress up (guilty as charged i was)
12. leaving a bowl of candy on the doorstep for kids (like the honor system applies here. ha. are you an idiot?)
13. kids jumping kids...for candy. (c'mon man)

we give good candy!

itunes: big deal, right?

youre damn right it's a big deal. especially if it's my list.

i completely jacked this concept off some blog i came across. although, ive been posting my own playlists since the beginning of time, this is the first of many to come where i actually show you the playlist as seen on my itunes. always one to boast about my elaborate musical library, i thought id share this with you.

a sprinkle of hip hop, a cup of jazz, a dash of soul, a teaspoon of rock and a whole lot of funk.
mix well and serve immediately.

download these now or forever hold your peace.

i went to my library---> hit refresh---> and tada! what you see is the result above.

[don't get your panties all bunched up now, im gonna post about the spectacle-of-this-past-weekend soon]

making a big scene

happy 28th to my brother mark.

now..the big scene:

the facts:
  • "group" project on de bono's six thinking hats for educational psychology
  • 6 group members - 4 1 girl(s), 3 women and 2 guys
  • the environment: a college cafeteria in the basement

yesterday, i organized a meeting where my fellow group members and i would go over the finer points of next week's one hour presentation. things were great until this one girl finally arrived.

in the past, i should let it be known, this particular group member - we'll call her ms. B (short for bougie girl/stuck up/high maintenance or even bitch) - really wanted to run the show. she had her own ideas and she shoved them down our throats.

when the other girls had ideas, they would ask the rest of the group what they thought about them. when i or the other dude had something to offer, we asked for input; that's how a group should work. this girl however, came with her agenda and commanded "this is what we're doing and that's the law of the land. i am bougie girl; i am leader, here me roar".

ok, maybe not in those exact words but something along those lines. of course, with that attitude and being scholars, we all opposed to her dictatorship as university students should. fair enough.

see, i can let shit ride.

yesterday however, was the last straw. the girls of my group, God bless 'em were nice, polite, tight lipped girls. very decent. they not only took her shit, but accepted it and flushed their ideas down the toilet. these girls were cool...but way too liberal in terms of letting themselves be walked over.

i, on the other hand couldnt take it anymore. i, on the other hand, was raised differently and i, on the other hand, do not fit your stereotypical, falsely believed orthodox idea about an asian male being 'passive agressive'. i on the other hand, dont fit under a particular label or within a box.

i have principles and morals i strongly believe in and i, therefore, i raised hell.

yesterday, upon making our powerpoint presentation on ms. B's laptop, ms. B herself asked the group "do any of you know how to change the color of the background on a slide?"

me, being the helpful guy i am replied, "yea i can."

because i never majored in powerpointology, i, like the rest of the general population, had to play around with the settings before i got the exact sequence of keys and buttons. i never knew off by heart to go to tools-->slides or whatever the next step would be. all i knew was that i was capable of changing a fucking background of a slideshow. ive completed slideshows and presented them effectively dozens of times over the past four years - you best believe me.

so im going through the options of powerpoint and seconds into looking for the exact option i needed to achieve what i wanted to achieve, ms. B says "look, if you don't know how to do it, then don't say you do. you obviously don't know".

i did know - fuck that.
and with that...i blew up. i did my best fred flintstone impersonation, true to form and said "you know what?...i dont appreciate you talking down to me condescendingly. im trying to help you here".

[scared shitless and in panic] "ohh no nooo i didnt mean it like that", said ms. B

"that's bullshit! fuck you. yes you did. i mean ever since we started this group assignment a month ago, youve been talking to everyone like that. [looking at group members] dont you agree?"

[shocked and not wanting to take sides, there was silence on their part]

at this point, the group was silent and ms. B couldnt look me in the eye.

[a good 67 seconds rolls by of silence]

"do you know how to do this? i can't put bullets in before the text", said ms. B to me [trying to act like noting happened].

"fuck off..you know everything, why dont you do it yourself?"

[mrs. B smiles to self..still cant look me in the eye]

"get that fucking smirk off your face", i said [teeth gritted].

basically, after that...she started listening to everyone and addressing their thoughts and their input.
after that, i could see nice smiles from the girls who couldnt or wouldnt speak up.
after that and after we were alone with ms. B absent, the rest of my group applauded me and thanked me for putting her in her place.

"i was so glad someone finally put her in her place."

see, i quote exactly..that was an exact quote.

and that's my whole big scene. and no, im not sorry about it. if it made a difference for the better, then im happy. if our group is tighter for it, then im happy.

now we can start working for this A+ TOGETHER...and as a "group" - as it should have been from the start.

i'm a leader. i lead by example. leading means respecting your followers but at the same time, not having to sacrifice what you feel you have to do to get to where youre going.

    i lead.

    ms. B...she's not a leader; she's not a follower.
she'd like to posture as a leader but she read the wrong manual.
ms. B is a fucking idiot.

i dont care who you are, how pretty you are or what the circumstances are -- if you fail to treat others without dignity and respect; others who can't speak up for themselves and if you try that shit on me, be prepared to be put in your place.

    signed,
    jason ryan de los Reyes
    (place-putter and professional leader)

so i told this girl off today. she is my group member; nothing more nothing less. this whole telling off ordeal included the words "fuck you"..."that's bullshit" and the ever popular "wipe that fucking smirk off your face".

i only do these things or say these words when they are due. believe me.

sorry for the minimal entry but i have to go. i think someone is stealing my home's internet connection.
i'll be back after ive sorted this out.

details on me "making a scene" later.

my digital watch is late by ten minutes. looking back, what in the world did i synchronize it with?

looking forward to t-7 hours. there's a lot going on this weekend.
  • there's my brother's birthday tomorrow and as a result, dinner on sunday - fancy schmancy japanese perhaps.
  • there's a dinner tomorrow and later that night, heading up to brock university with the boys - that should be fun and dangerous
  • there's drinks on friday and there's the jamiroquai concert with probably more beverages
there's a wedding on saturday - what should i wear???

    son's gonna get wreck.

there goes my stomach and it's time meet up for a group conference.
man, there are some ugly ass peole in this lab.

    - words often uttered by myself in my bedroom.
at night of course....when im on my computer and it's hard to find the headphone jack on my computer. geez.

so im back bitches. was i missed? let me know you missed me. i was missed, i know. stop..i know, i know.

so three exams are behind me and one more to go - scheduled for next wednesday. with that stated, i said screw the hiatus, i need me some bloggage. although i have nothing meaningful to say, i thought itd be time well spent to gloat about how im going to the jamiroquai concert this friday at kool haus (there rj, im coming..you big sissy. stop your crying..u sucky baby).

it's a celebration, bitches. grab a drink grab a glass...after that, i'll grab your ass!

[theyre only my favourite band..eventhough their new album is fluff]

more postage to come shortly. in the meanwhile, keep disregarding that hitaus/come back in two weeks message and swing by here as much as you want.

i was missed..i know, i know. stop. ok...you miss me.

    ___________

    what's your name (again)?

so im at the bus stop the other day and this random dude starts talking to me. hes with this girlfriend so you know it's not one of those instances again where some random gay dude comes up to me expecting some pleasure of some sort. anyhow, dude says "hey, you went to goetz right (note* goetz = my old high school)...and also bishop too rite (*note bishop = my elementary school). i smirk and go "yea".
"cool. i knew i recognized you from somewhere"
meanwhile im just smiling at his girlfriend..(ohh she looks so delicious).
coming back to earth i ask "what year are you in?"
    "first. and you?"
    "well..5th..but you can say 4th"
    "......???"
"how the heck can you know me if we've never been at those schools during the same era?"
    "i dunno...thats messed."

that is fucking messed. but oh man..his girlfriend..

anyhow, do i have one of those faces that you just recognize out of anywhere>? was my mug posted, without my knowledge, on one of those missing children posters? i hope not. is that how people recognize me out of nowhere?

as for me...im bad with names. i recognize people but cant put my thumb on how or where. it's terrible. when i reaquaint myself with a so called aquaintance, i never really complete my proper address...it goes along the lines of "heyyyyyy....(extended and additional 'y' sound emphasizes how much you really dont know their name), how you been?"

so wack. and that's my post. i came back to post that...that was an attempt to be "meaningful".
    so much for that.

nobody seems to be selling the exact type of leather jacket that im looking to buy. dont make me resort to skinning a cow and making my own, industry..dont even make me.

danier leather?? danier is for white folk. yea..so what?

black on both sides: mos def and hypocrisy

those are two words i never thought i'd say in the same sentence.

in a scene from late 80's singleton film, boyz 'n' the hood, laurence fishburn takes his son and friend to one of the grimiest south central los angeles ghettos in compton. he points to a billboard advertising alcohol and then has this big meaningful speech about how corporations exploit the poor, especially blacks, by selling them corruption in the form of expensive s.u.v.'s, alcohol and guns. this was motivated secretly on a grand scale just the same when crack cocaine was brought about in the ghettos during the 80s.

before you read this, i want all of you to at least once, listen to his black on both sides album and blackstar album with fellow african bookstore owner (but better known to y'all as an m.c.) talib kweli. please, listen to these bodies of work before moving on. or at least look up their lyrics; both are my favourites of all time and both are masterpieces.

"This one goes to all them Big Will cats
With ice on they limbs and big rims on they Ac
You rollin' round town with your system bumped
And your windows cracked low to profile and front
Now I like to have nice things just like you
But I'm from Brooklyn, certain shit you just don't do"
    - "got" by mos def

so cue today and how vexed i am after confirming what i heard from a coworker of mine last week. it is true - mos def is the main spokesperson for the GM denali. although i haven't actually viewed the commercial, i heard he's rhyming about the leather interior and the smooth ride.

how could you 'black dante', how could you?

some of you say, so what?...he rhymed about a truck - b, has bills to pay like you and me.
little do you know, there's so much more meaning to this than just that. i have a hard time typing this on my sacred ibook but the fact of the matter is...
    MOS DEF SOLD OUT.

that's the worst thing that could happen to you as a hip hop artist. this has been the concrete manifesto of true m.c.'s for the past 30 years since hip hop's beginning. to sell out was the worst thing possible. to sell out meant to cut your soul out for the 'man'.

black eyed peas...they sold out. if you never heard their past works then you'd never know why or how they sold out.
talib with his latest two albums...i hate to say it, but he's borderline selling out. these are just a couple that most of you would be familar with.

i mean to me, it's not so much that he did an ad. that's fine. he has bills to pay and i have bills to pay. might as well ride the wave while he's made his appearances on broadway, the italian job, brown sugar, hitch hiker's guide etc. that's fine. we all have to hustle. rather, it's that he's rhyming about a fucking truck. a fucking s.u.v. this is in shear contrast to what he spoke out against during his "hungry" days when he just came out on the scene. to promote s.u.v.'s to black populations is just as bad as 50 cent promoting dealing crack or blowing some guy's brains out in a club when he's crossed your path in a club. it's just as bad as nelly talking about his 2 purs of air force ones; it's li- well you get the picture. it's selling dreams to the community while overlooking the process of attaining them. it's like saying "here, you need this truck. look at me. im the ish and ride in a nice leather-seated truck. now imagine yourself on your block rolling in this."

    (1) truck = status = success

    (1a) truck = success

the impoverished mind only sees the end product. by any means necessary they want to achieve this goal - this status symbol because anything better than ghetto is great. what the impoverished mind doesn't see is that there are many barriers that they have in front of them and me, as a minority, alike. instead of pimping the system and working through school, the impoverished mind wants the greatest goal for the least input and least time. the impoverished mind then turns to dealing drugs on his block, shooting and robbing. or more legitimatley and promising (if you can even say that) turns to playing basketball or rapping - disregarding academics and how minimal his or her chances are in actuallly making it to the nba or cutting a deal with sony records.

    (2) dream x hard work = truck = status = success

on his new danger album, mos says "fuck you, pay me". he wasn't lying.

i'm heartbroken. i really am. i dont know what to think from here on. i do respect his work A LOT...but where does this place him on my continuum of credibility and integrity.
he is one of the few true artists left.

    motherfuck you, corporations.

i still love mos def. i don't know why, but i gotta.
i look at how a person lives not how they die.

rapping is something we do; hip hop is what we live.
    word is bond

    vin diesel: xxx

i fucking hate vin diesel. but when someone in my house rented the movie xxx a year ago, i had to admit, i fell kinda in love with this movie. there's really no plot. there is however a few hot russian girls...a lot of shit exploding...lots of guns and these ridiculous stunts.

here we are again and xxx is on tv. theyre at this scene in some kind of rave. vinny is getting fresh with the girl before she disses him. they cut to some big mansion house party where i know shit is gonna go down. i'd like to say this is a low budget movie, but i cant - there are just too many million dollar shots and stunts.

xxx is one of these really shitty movies that i love to hate but love secretly. viva eastern europe!
where is that schlong vin diesel nowadays anyhow? last i heard, he was doing disney. fucking sellout.

what is he anyways?..black? italian? blacktalian? hes like the male mariah carey.

[ok, youre big..now stop wearing wife beaters]

ice cube as xxx...that's something beyond my apprehension.

p.s. men really shoudnt wear fur coats, i dont care what the circumstance.

it's true. the message boards are true. the rumours are not rumours but fact. it's not a great loss, but still a loss nontheless.
in november, me and my friends were scheduled to see common and kanye west in concert ON THE SAME STAGE. the thought of that absolutely transcends time and space for me.

now, however, common has dropped all appearances on the touch the sky tour with mr. west.

apparently, he landed a role in a movie along the likes of affleck, liota, andy garcia and alicia keys. this blows, but it aint so bad. im gonna still be looking forward to seeing kanye. no replacements have been scheduled to fill this unbelieveable void. its alright though...as long as were all going together, its all good. see you there, homeboys and homegirls. i must buy me a "good" tee. absolutely.

    read on...

top of the gloomy morning to ya

  • so i'm sick here..but feeling a lot "less sick" than the days past. there's something about the morning cough-up of phlegm that's really gratifying.

  • yesterday, i was once again inspired by my mom. you see, she just enrolled herself in a walkathon (which i'll pledge any amount she wants) and yoga classes. my mom and dad are my heroes - in more ways than you can even think of. truly inspiring.

  • remember that biomechanics lab i was doing last week during the holidays? well hard work pays off; i got an 80%. wha'cha know about that?!!

  • our phone line is out of order. we had the guy come in and check it out. he said everything is fine. i think that's a bunch of bullshit because he also suggested we open a new phoneline. why would i need a new line if everything's fine? oh right, so you can charge us more for the new line..that's why. effin a-hole.

  • i have educational psych today. wednesdays are always gold for me. i have this assignment where my group and i have to present learning theories to the class. our theory is de bono's 6 thinking hats. i happen to be the yellow hat not because im asian but because i'm a sucker. upon further inspection though, i found out that the yellow hat is optimism and positivity. it's only fitting then, isn't it. God knows, child. God knows.

  • men like the end result of shaving; we just hate the actual process. pictures of me coming soon.

before i go i just wanna wish a happy belated to marriane and a happy future bday (this weekend) to grace. see y'all soon.

"thanks tim horton's for sending me to camp"

i never really got a chance to write about coboconk. i kept putting it off..and off....and off until i lost the moment. the whole feeling just isn't there anymore. whether anyone documented it or not, that memory will always be with everyone - you best believe that.

during a time when autumn is beginning and leaves are turning, i thought i'd warm it up a bit with some pictures from this past august & our coboconk weekend.

they say ergonomics and being biomechanically correct can really improve the lives of people. funny, after 2 days in the lab, i think the complete opposite. i'm glad to say i will soon have this lab assignment under my belt. just a few more pages to type up and it's all kosher.

good that has come from this:
    a) an excellent one-on-one discussion about biomechanics with my prof.
    b) two days of lab work that i'll remember for the rest of my life and laugh about with my friends during commencement when i recieve that diploma this summer.

other than that, i'm glad to say that i've finally found the time to sit down and actually appreciate this new blackalicious album.
the craft is nice. reeeeeeel nice.

if you ever needed a soundtrack that would enable you to pass university, then add these 5 tracks to your playlist from blackalicious' past works:

    - making progress
    - passion
    - release

rj just asked me that on msn.

it's true. show rj some love too. he got a job. his first steps in the "real world". gluck homie.

back to the lab at 8am tomorrow...on a holiday too!

dr. phil VS me & the boys

once every so often, i amuse myself and others by doing random impersonations, or at least what i believe are valid impersonations of many different personas. i do the broken english of filipinos, chinese, vietnamese, jamaicans, italians, portugese and middle eastern - all of which i don't think are racist at all. i mean if i do such impersonations (most of which involve pointless dialogue) in front of my friends or even strangers from these denominations and they laugh, then i feel that passes the racist test. not that that necessarily gives me the right to poke fun...but i do. and when i do, you best believe it is all in clean fun.

on the other hand, i do made up personas like the "look at my noodle" guy or the italian nona (granny) who likes lamborghinis...or even the HAHAHA-halal guy who works at popeyes. osama bin laden has even rolled off my tongue once or 9 times in the past.

today, after being in retirement for a few weeks, the dr. phil/nasaly caucasian male voice came back. one line led to another...and well...i even involved my friends. so starting here, from now on, i bring to you, a message from dr. phil.
it's much more surreal in person. you'll have to do your best to imagine dr. phil saying these things.

what are you thinking?!!!....it IS dr. phil saying these things.

    what dr. phil might've said:
"looook at the siiiiize of my fingers. now imagine how big my penis is. look at the size of these fingers, ho-leee cow. i could punch you right out of your sanity".

"my wife has had my penis for 15 years now. she tellls me it's enormous."

"look at the mugs of these girls.
my penis has retreated back into my torso.
oh my gosh, i can't even smile right."

it's so much better in audio...but youre just gonna have to use your imagination. i swear.

considering that i'm really considering leaving, i thought i'd write up a couple blurbs about 3 of my friends and coworkers at mexx. (#'s 32, 33, 34)
their lives are more than worthy of being documented.

oh yea...theyre filipino, so if you have a thing against filipinos, then you might wanna fuck off and eat a dick sandwich stir away from that link.

plus, i haven't updated lapu lapu loves you in centuries.
plus, if i never wrote about it, who would?

those were wise words from the green eyed bandit - eric sermon from back in the days. he's right.

one of the compliments i like hearing most from others is how they admire my relaxed-and-laid-back-i'm-doing-my-own-thing-jack attitude. thank you.

take for instance today: my manager gives me my daily goal - $2000 worth of gear to sell for my 8 hour shift. not impossible, but very challenging. never one to give a shit about these stupid selling goals, i played it cool for not 1 but the first 3 hours of my shift, doing jack shit, talking to a coworker who, too, hates the job and is in dire straits as to when he's gonna quit and leave that whole bogus work environment. you cant blame us though; when shit gets sour, it gets sour.

so after 3 hours of standing at the entrance of the store and having my manager getting frustrated that im not making the company any bread, my coworker takes his hour lunch and im stuck with the newbies.

bunch of fucking asshole, shark motherfuckers.

all the while while i was fucking around and joking and enjoying myself, these monkeys are pressing every customer who comes in. i hate that shit. that kind of selling was never a tactic in my playbook. you get a "hi" from me and that's that. i never lie about how shit looks and if you don't like it, fine...get the fuck out of the store - youre cool, im cool, everything is kosher.

so getting back on track..these monkeys are trying their best to sell sell sell. a deep sigh comes along as i roll my eyes and think to myself, "fucking rookies". so after 3 hours, these guys sell a total of what?...300 each. here's where relaxed jay brings the shift to a slight simmer and gets into selling mode. you see, the first 3 hours of today is what i call a warm up. i crack my knuckles and do my thing. i approach. simple as a dimple...blah blah..a suggestion here and there..some trousers, some shirts...some socks..blah blah. smiles and chuckles. laughs and a little legwork - then bang; a $700 sale for one customer.

i don't fuck around. so to all you sharks out there - whatever youre selling, dont be a fucking monkey jumping your ass around to sell. dont be a monkey. be like me - and move sexy and graciously like a cheetah. it'll do your pockets much better and youll save more energy.

im one of those assholes who doesnt do shit and gets paid.
    simple as a dimple.

job, you bore me and although i have bills to pay and knowledge to buy, i have overstayed my welcome.
fuck that. what am i saying?
i'm too good for this job. there, i said it.

i heard some of your are waiting on your police background checks....where the fuck is mine? it's been 3 weeks.
    i need a new gig.

marriage? not yet. ever? most likely.
career?...i can't even think past this semester.

besides, on my itinerary, there's more school after this school. oh yea...and travelling.
MUST travel while time is sparse.

back in the day when things were cool
we used to meet up with these dudes
then we'd roll out on hopes and truths
and would ride around the park till its after dark
