it's 4am and im still up. yeah, it's true. i've been crazy-busy with work, school and a terrible lack of sleep. it doesnt end here though.
some of my friends refer to busy weeks as "hell weeks"; if that's the case, then this week i have several interviews with the devil, himself. tuesday starts with the cold part of hell...all the way till thursday nite when im near the core of the earth - which is probably the hot part of hell.

it snowed. except this time, i woke up to my open window, only to see my house along with every other house on the block dusted with snow - and no, this isn't gingerbread country. no matter how many times i have it snowed on, whether it be the beginning of the season or the end of the season, i hate the thought of new snow falling from the sky. actually, it's not even the snow itself, it's more of the fact that i have to shovel the snow, wait for the bus in the snow, walk from class to class in the snow, look at the snow when it turns brown and polluted along with having the snow melt slightly only to re-freeze and turn into it's dreaded cousins, ice and it's mutant brother, black ice. anyhow, 'tis the season, losers.

Super-sizing Asian Americans

Low-income Asian and Pacific Islander children in California are becoming overweight at an alarming rate -- and will soon catch up to low-income white, black and Latino children in the proportion who are overweight or obese, according to research reported today at the 5th Asian American Cancer Control Academy. The percentage of low-income Asian and Pacific Islander children in California who are overweight more than doubled between 1994 and 2003, from 7 percent to 15 percent.

Poor diet and a sedentary lifestyle, with resulting overweight and obesity, contribute to one in three cancers in this country, as well as to such chronic illnesses as diabetes and heart disease.

"California has the most Asian Americans in the United States, and we've got the opportunity to mount aggressive programs to prevent the unhealthy acculturation-related changes in diet and physical activity that have occurred with other immigrant groups," said Susan Foerster, chief of the Cancer Prevention and Nutrition Section of the California Department of Health Services. "Efforts to stop the erosion of the healthy traditional Asian and Pacific Islander dietary and activity patterns are urgently needed to stop the sharp increases we're seeing in overweight people, especially children."

As a first step, Foerster and her colleagues at DHS, working with investigators at the UCLA School of Public Health, recently conducted 24 focus groups involving more than 200 individuals from three low-income Asian-American ethnic groups: Chinese, Vietnamese and Hmong. Interviews were conducted in Mandarin, Cantonese, Vietnamese and Hmong. The study was supported in part by the National Cancer Institute's Asian American Network for Cancer Awareness, Research and Training (AANCART), headquartered at UC Davis, and the DHS California Nutrition Network, with funding from the U.S. Department of Agriculture Food Stamp Program.

The study revealed that Asian immigrants have a lot to teach mainstream America about health. All three Asian subgroups agreed a healthy lifestyle depends on eating nutritious foods, especially fresh produce, being physically active, and fostering mental and emotional health.

According to the research, Chinese, Hmong and Vietnamese immigrants alike regard "freshness" as a requisite for healthfulness, and they define "fresh" foods as those that aren't frozen, dried, canned or preserved and are pesticide- and hormone-free. Dried or frozen foods, sodas, fried foods, fast food (include take-out Chinese) and excessive sweets are seen as unhealthy. Home-cooked meals are considered healthier than restaurant food. All three Asian groups emphasized eating vegetables over fruit.

Interviewees also emphasized the importance of physical activity, and they shared a belief that exercise benefits the overall health of individuals by increasing energy and strength, improving physical and mental wellbeing, promoting weight management and preventing sickness.

At the same time, many of the focus group members expressed a sense of powerlessness over the influence of television and food advertising and the school environment on their children, according Margorie Kagawa-Singer, associate professor of public health in the UCLA School of Public Health and Asian American Studies Department.

"The marketplace and schools are the main purveyors of poor dietary practices," said Kagawa-Singer, who led the focus group research. "Nobody is telling immigrant families that their traditional diets are good and should be maintained."

Said Moon S. Chen, Jr., professor of public health sciences at UC Davis School of Medicine and Medical Center and principal investigator for AANCART: "We cannot afford to wait to prevent the development of diseases that are often irreversible once they start. The Asian American populations in California offer a rare opportunity to avert a health disparity before it occurs."

Beginning in the late 1980s, California launched what is now the largest national public education campaign to increase fruit and vegetable consumption for cancer prevention. The California 5 a Day Campaign has since been tailored for Latinos, African Americans, children and low-income families.

"To counter the seemingly inevitable Americanized diet and protect the beneficial traditional Asian diet and physical activity patterns, a tailored campaign is strongly recommended for California's low-income, immigrant Chinese, Vietnamese and Hmong communities," Foerster said.

Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders constitute almost 5 percent of the population of the United States and 12 percent of the California population. About 70 percent of Asian Americans in this country are first-generation immigrants.

Statewide, low-income children are increasingly overweight. Among low-income white children, 18 percent are overweight or obese, a 50-percent increase between 1994 and 2003. The rate is 19 percent for blacks, up 46 percent, and 23 percent for Latinos, a 44-percent increase.

i applaud the ontario government for their actions.
they have worked to ban junk food from elementary schools. here's where it gets nasty though. on one front, we have the liberals saying it's great that the vending machines are taken out of the hallways; on the other front, we have the conservative government saying the liberals are "assuming the role of official parent" and making choices for the kids that 'responsible' parents should. they conservatives also believe that taking junk food out of schools will cause a large chunk of school funding to be lost from junk food companies who provide the machines.

my position is the liberal's position. if you take the vending machines out of the schools, regardless if most of the revenue from vending machines are used mostly by adults at nite who rent the schools for various functions, the likelihood of a child who sees a vending machine and will therefore buy junk from a vending machine, is much greater than a child who doesnt see or have access to a 'junkbox' in the first place. as for raising funds for the kids who don't have enough money to go on that school trip or who need new phys. ed equipment or who need new books, there are other ways to "raise funds"..that is, via "fund-raising". you know, have a bake-sale, a talent show, or craft sale etc. raising funds via fund-raising. wow, im brilliant!

most people don't understand that the well being of our children is everything. the well-being of ourselves is everything. we have school reform occurring where physical education and physical activity is being cut out from the system for more time focused towards "more important" things such as science, math and english. i think whoever comes up with these ideas is a fucking moron. yes, i said fucking moron. yes, those three subjects are the basis for most of our society's job and career market, yes it's vital to have these skills, but i ask, isn't it vital to be vital? if you're sick or fat or just lazy and lack energy, what good will you be in your job? if youre sick and all of the above, how the hell do you expect to even do your job? if your kids are sick, how will they fare? to blindly let our kids and even ourselves go downhill and disregard their health by letting them eat crap, letting them watch t.v. for extended hours, letting them surf the net, letting them play video games etc. it's slowly killing them. if you overlook their health, be ready to pay a fat-ass bill for healthcare down the line. and if that's the case, dont let me hear you bitching and moaning, cause i warned you.

one of my two favourite picks for canada's greatest canadian, next to terry fox (a fellow kinesiologist, mind you), former prime minister trudeau was responsible for shaping and making canada what it is today. he had a vision of a multicultural canada; a bilingual canada that includes the province of quebec; a canada independent of british control and a canada with a voice. all in all, this is why mr. trudeau is one of the greatest, if not , the greatest canadian in history.
thinking about my future, i often wonder if im to end up working here, raising a family here and enjoying my the rest of my life here. i often feel the taxes are frustrating and it's too cold for me, my wife or even my kids to stay here (to name a few). then i stop and think about how i was born and raised here. i often think about my experiences here and how unique a place canada really is. you see, here, the word "multicultural" means something very different from any other place in the world. it's here that you can literally take a 30min walk through the world - meeting and greeting every ethnic group, by just heading downtown. for that reason, i dont think i can ever leave here. australia is an option. states would be o.k. (to an extent). the philippines?...i'll decide if that's an option when i head back after i graduate. it's not surprising that a feel a lose of connection to the motherland - i haven't been back in 14 years. however, there's not a day that goes by without me trying my best to learn and reclaim everything about my roots.
shifting back to the trudeau segment, his life is really an inspiration.
we should all strive to live a legacy. i wanna lead a legacy. you should wanna lead a legacy too.

in terms of work, i've noticed this weekend, that theyre really milking me and aaron.
just like old navy last year, they give me a 4 hour shift. what does this mean?
it means that in the province of ontario, canada, they dont gotta give me a break. they could break me for 15mins depending on the discretion of the manager but there's no law stating they have to. but get this loophole...i work a 1-close shift today (sunday) that's "technically" 4 hours (close = 5pm on sunday) similar to yesterday's 2-close (2-6pm). but these shifts are not really a mere 4 hours as it may seem to the untrained eye. these shifts are 5 hours, considering we have to clean up the store after everyone's left and get it to tip top, brand new shape for the next day. so yes, you now understand the loopholes of retail. but im not complaining. the job is o.k. when im not so tired. what should i do or can do anyhow, not sell? im commission-based getting big fat bonuses at the end of the month..so why wouldnt i push myself to get my ass paid? understand?

i'm catholic..and one day, i'll get married and have some kids.
whether she's catholic or not probably won't phase me that much. sure, it'll cushion the situation and make relating to one another a bit easier in the beginning. but a difference in belief/faith is not about to stop me from being intimate with whole groups and demographics of females just waiting to meet a handsome fellow like myself.

i have lots of friends with various faiths; some are muslim, some are jewish, some are baptist, some are orthodox Christian, some are catholic, some hindu, some sikh, some even athiest.
it really doesnt phase me.
i never really get worked up over the whole Catholicism as Christianity bout.
why? because we all believe in one God.
the same applies to Jews and Muslims..whether you believe there was a prophet, muhammed as prophet or jesus as a mere prophet or the son of Him, we all believe in Him.
how you live your lifestyle or how i live mine is not for either of us to judge.
Only God can judge us.
even if you dont believe in God, or one God...or gods...maybe your an aborginal person who praises the power of the earth and nature..maybe you worship the spirits or even voodoo. life is too short to get worked up over that.

sad to say though, faith has been the cause of many the war since the beginning of time.

whatever you believe in (sorry athiests, this doesnt include you), just know that there's a higher power than yourself. when things get rough and tough, and you need some help, you have faith to guide you.

Intense marketing needed to attract men to teaching, Ontario educators say

(Nov. 12, 2004 – Toronto) A study into the declining numbers of male teachers in Ontario suggests provincial government intervention is needed to reverse the trend.

Narrowing the Gender Gap: Attracting Men to Teaching recommends that the province champion a multi-year marketing campaign, research and possible incentives to bring men into the profession and retain them.

The report follows months of consultation with students, teachers, administrators, parents, education stakeholders and community groups, and an examination of trends across Canada and around the world.

Ontario educators launched the study in February in response to school board hiring concerns and the lack of available male teachers. The research project was undertaken by Jean-Luc Bernard, Directeur de l'éducation, Conseil scolaire de district du Centre-Sud-Ouest (CSDCSO); David Hill, Director of the Trillium Lakelands District School Board; Pat Falter, Consulting Director, English Language School of Education, Laurentian University; and Doug Wilson, Registrar, Ontario College of Teachers.

Fewer than one in three Ontario teachers are men. The shortage is acute at the primary-junior levels where, according to Ontario College of Teachers data, only one in 10 teachers under the age of 30 are male.

“Finding, hiring and retaining quality teachers – male or female – is a priority in education, particularly in high need subjects such as French, math and science,” says College Registrar Doug Wilson. “Unfortunately, young men are choosing other career paths.”

“We wanted to identify the barriers that keep men from becoming teachers, talk about it with students, teachers, parents and system partners and come up a practical, forward-looking plan,” said CSDCSO Education Director Jean-Luc Bernard.

The project uncovered a number of perceived barriers to men entering teaching, among them: low salaries; negative stereotypes; and fears of allegations of sexual misconduct.

As a result, the project partners recommend:

* a provincial government sponsored three-year marketing campaign
* providing materials to education faculties, district school boards and other employers and organizations to complement provincial, regional and local recruitment campaigns
* showing the benefits of teaching and working with children and dispelling myths that discourage men from entering the teaching profession
* investigating further incentives
* increasing alternative and part-time programs at faculties of education
* encouraging school boards to offer co-operative education and peer tutoring placements for male high school students in elementary schools
* developing mentoring programs for male teachers
* conducting research to see whether there is a correlation between the academic achievement of boys the presence of male teachers.

yesterday was my first day at work.
i dress up in all black.
that includes black slacks, black socks, black ankle boots, black shirt and of course, but not necessarily, black underwear. all this black i wear makes me feel like i came out of the fucking matrix.
i hate wearing all black from top to bottom..but hey, what can you do?
beats last year's old navy's red tshirt. it's ok though...imma just have to mix up my gear once in awhile which will most likely have me wearing my socks on my ears, my black shirt backwards and my boots on my hands - all in the name of variety of course.

so i get to work, thinking imma start selling like my life depended on it. i was ready. but they werent ready for my readiness. instead, i, of course, had to understand the in's and outs of the company. and how does one know about the ins and outs of a company, you ask?
answer: by beating it over your head with a 3inch binder of the company's polices that takes an hour to (speed) read followed by another 2 inch binder outlining, but not limited to, roughly 20 different ways to fold clothing (which took about another hr). by the end of all that reading, i was ready to lead a bible retail-study class. all in all, work isnt too bad to answer you, abs. it's actually great; laid back and fun. considering im comissioned-based, i dont think itll be hard to make sales on high-end gear in such a rich-bastardful mall such as sweet sherway.

today is day 2, and i cant wait....but then again, it can wait as i have homework, reading, studying and group conferencing coming out of every orifice of my body.

it's that damn good! i mean sure, the first release 'so how's your girl?' was amazing..but this one, if it's possible is just as good, if not, better. this collection includes appearences from de la soul, del, qbert, linkin park, john oats (of hall & oates fame), jamie cullum and jack johnson to name a few! to describe the album, id say it's a superstylish and handsome curriculum that everyone should enjoy at least once in their lifetime as a human.

tuesday, i went to my old highschool and watched a senior girls basketball practice. no, i wasnt underneath the bleachers watching, sweating and playing with myself in addition to panting. it wasnt like that. jay doesnt do pedophilia. actually, i had to observe a practice for this training and methodology assignment that i had. i must say...the goetz gators senior girls are flawless in basketball. geez...any of them will school my ass. back to the point, all my kin teachers from higschool recognized me. i think thats dope. i mean those motherfuckers were my backbone and roots in the wonderful world of kinesiology and physical education. who knows? maybe i might even work with them in a couple years. who fucking knows? i just thought it was dope going back. and why the hell is everyone so hard and thugged out in goetz? geez....

as for these past few days, ive been really tired..and grouchy for that matter. i owe that all to the extreme amounts of sugar ive been ingesting since last sunday's halloween. im telling you, my blood sugar has been spiking..which is good when i need that energy in the morning and during the afternoon, but not so good news when im coming 'down' from that sugar high.

i also made dinner tonite. since this skool year started, i havnt had time to cook all that much. but i just recently promised my mom that im in charge of dinner for fridays and mondays.
let's share a recipe that was conceived tonite, right off the top of my head, shall we?

for starters, i should note that i had
~grilled chicken breast with peanut sauce over steamed rice with a side of steamed greens

peanut sauce
3-6 gloves of garlic, finely chopped
3 tbsp of sesame oil
3 tbsp of dark soy sauce
2 tbsp brown sugar or honey
4 heaping tbsp of smooth or chunky peanut butter
1 tbsp of chinese chili bean paste

in small bowl, whisk all the ingredients together. the spicy heat of this dish may be tweaked according to your braveness and desired preference. because this mixture is thick and paste-like, it would be adviseable to slowly add water to your desired consistency. if you over dilute the mixture, just gradually add more peanut butter to correct.

chicken breasts
6 skinless, boneless chicken breast pieces

wash and dry your chicken breasts for safety and paranoia reasons. in a shallow pan, place the pieces side by side and slowly simmer until no pink flesh remains. remove partially cooked chicken from water and set aside. heat up grill, whether outdoor or george foreman or other indoor type. you wanna have the grill very hot as to not have the chicken stick to its surface. get nice grill marks on each piece of chicken and ensure that the internal flesh of the chicken breast is cooked thoroughly; you can check this by cutting the centre of each piece and ensuring that the juices run clear. after cooking each piece of chicken, set aside without stacking, cut chicken breasts diagonally in 3/4" segments and let rest. after at least 2 minutes of resting, plate the pieces in a wide, shallow dish. drizzle half of the peanut sauce over the pieces and keep the other half as a side portion for dipping or more drizzling. garnish with small red and green chili peppers and sprinkle sesame seeds over the chicken and peanut sauce.


steamed greens
4 bunches of mini bok choy (or big bok choy or broccoli or whatever greens you desire)

wash all vegetables throughly, slice and segment. place in bamboo steamer or metal steamer until leaves are deep green and stalks are still firm. do not over cook! soggy greens suck. plate and dress with a light mixture of soy sauce, sesame oil and sugar to your desired taste.

steamed rice
if you dont know how to make steamed rice up to this point in life, then good luck to you in the big wide world.

serves 4 comfortably.

i dunno, but ever since my last update, or when i had the urge to update last, i decided to try reading before sleep as opposed to fucking up my eyes looking at this 17" flickering deathtrap.

i've also been doing a shitload of reserach for some assignments - both being rock 'n' roll related and drug abuse/addictive behaviour related.

when you think of my mindstate, think billboard's american rock 'n' roll in review, rock 'n' roll: an unruly history and the virgin illustrated encyclopedia of rock.

as for scholarly addiction-related literature...bender's "teen addiction" is ok..but Stimmel's "cultural and sociological aspects of alcoholism and substance abuse" fares better. then again, durran & thakker's "substance use & abuse: cultural and historical perspectives" ain't too shabby itself. but that's not to take away anything from weaver's "the sociology of american drug use", south's "drugs: cultures, controls & everyday life" and venurelli's "drugs and society 6th edition". no way, jose!

i dunno if you heard, but OHIP (the ontario health insurance plan) delisted several services from it's list of coverage including: physiotherapy, chiropractic treatments and eye exams.

me, being the idiot that i am, only realized this recently and attempted to book an exam for my eyes before the nov, 1 deadline of coverage ended (here's why). of course, there were other idiots out there, just like me who beat me to the punch. unfortunately, i missed the deadline...

anyways, im at the optometrist's office..reading some pretty good magazines. one touched on the difference between the international taekwondo federation (ITF) and the world taekwondo federation (WTF). i just thought it was cool to find out that the founder of the art started the ITF and only after he had beef with the south korean government, they made up their own federation - the WTF. so yea, if youre in taekwondo and youre part of the WTF, then eat a dick sandwich! i dunno why you should do this...maybe i just feel it's the least you could do to give General Choi Hong Hi some props.

going back to my eye exam, he examined my eyes...we talked about profession and school - the usual mumbo jumbo that should occur between patient and health care professional.

so i sit in the big optometrist chair behind those weird-ass looking eye-scope things...he does his thing and i ask how my eyes are.

now here's where it gets weirded out...

jay: how are my eyes?
dr. HOH: very dreamy, my sweet asian prince. yes they are...you very dreamy boy.

i then gulped in nervousness.
the next thing i knew - dude went on his knees and started unzipping my pants - face nearing groin.

actually, naw, that never happened, he just said my eyes were fine.
imagine that did happen though?
that's messed up.
that's actually pretty gay too.

not that there's anything wrong with being gay...i just think that'd be pretty gay.

but yea...back to the point. that motherfucking eye exam was a whopping 95 bucks!!
it's all good though. i shouldve set up a visit a long time ago...i was overdue by 2 years. funny thing too...he said my left eye got weaker and my right eye became stronger in vision.
maybe my right eye has been compensating for the frail and fragile weak left eye.
that pussy!
but hey...i guess my eye sight has been pretty consistent..one got stronger and the other got weaker..so really, have i moved along the visual continuum?

all i know is, i now have a new prescription.
and all i know is, i now have an excuse to buy new frames!

never one to have dialogue full of mediocracy, i decided to post just 2 over the past few days that i had.

(1) with my mom.
topic: smoking laws
setting: watching the evening news

mom: yeah, they should really just let people smoke; if they wanna kill themselves, then let them.

jay: i dont think so, mom. i think that if the government really cared about the well-being of their citizens, they'd abolish smoking as a whole.

m: but that wouldn't be fair. just like the anchor and most viewers stated, that'd be taking away your rights and privilages.

j: if the goverment really cared..seriously cared about their people, theyd make it illegal. we all know the effects of cigarette smoke and how addictive nicotine is. the only reason why governments (both american and canadian and anywhere else in the universe) DON'T abolish smoking is because they make money off tobacco. if you provide a product that people can get addicted to and add a tax to every purchase of that particular product, whether it be tobacco or alcohol, people will repeatedly crave and purchase these products. the politicians in control know this and put a tax on cigarettes. in essence, they make a killing (both literally and figuratively) in profit. and that's why theyll never make cigarettes illegal.

m: how about the high taxes on those cigarettes? those deter the smokers.

j: no matter how high a tax is, if a person craves something to the extent that theyre addicted, they will find a way to get what they want, regardless of the cost and access difficulty. if it was only as easy as placing a high tax on tobacco to deter smokers from smoking, then what's stopping the government from legalizing heroin and crack-cocaine?

just some things to think about.

first, to my friend, the girls from highschool and the girl from class...YOURE A DAMN RACIST! and beyong that, your pathetic. how the fuck can you be a racist against your own kind???? that's shit that you'd only see on springer. but oh well.
