salute.
so my friend rocky is leaving on friday for an army assignment over in british columbia. it involves some training and security. being that he's a corporal, he assured me he has some pull among those cadets he's gonna be babysitting over there.

my boy will be gone for the remainder of the summer...who will be my wing man and/or drinking buddy now? any volunteers????

but back to me and rocks..we're similar in many ways:

  • he's a fitness major/ personal trainer - im a kinesiologist
this allows us to discuss different workout routines, nutrition, and buffoons at the gym who think theyre the shit but are really morons
  • we both love women
they could be older...they could be our age..but usually younger. in this case........well that information is top secret
  • we both have the same playstation 2 games
more or less. these are mainly espionage/military/strategy/combat games were you get to save the world from evil terrorists and biohazardous weapons of mass destruction..something along those lines.
  • we agree bruce lee in his prime could kick jet li prime's ass anyday of the year
it's true...go ask my mutha..and with your wrinkled pussy, i cant be your loverrrrrrrr...sorry i had to make it rhyme somehow (snoop dogg 1993)
  • we've both worked at old navy
even at the same time. with rj..and aaron, too! that's messed up. we're too old to work there..and besides, i hate their gear (besides my boarder shorts and fleece pants for 13bucks..holla)

well, that's all for this tribute..there's a couple more things that are similar like our love for canadian beer and backstabbing ex-bestfriends etc..but yall dont wanna hear about that now do you?

i got him a gift too, since his his bday is next month and he won't be here to celebrate...tune in tomorrow to see what it was.

for now...check out a really good wrapping job.
(i dont know who did that..but damn..that's a good wrapping job, i must say)

    btw...
    it's a joke!
it's a joke people..take it with grain of salt..im being funny.

    happy canada day tomorrow, folks!
too bad im working...working with my dad has it's advantages and drawbacks.

for one, it's good pay and i learn...for another, he doesn't believe in holidays pertaining to canada or the british monarchy. he just doesn't give a shit....just like those stores always open year round.....he must be chinese.

    have a good day.

    vive le canada!!!

yesterday i was called by a very close friend to help assist in a move. although there were previous plans to help this immediate friend move..those got pushed to a month later. instead, myself and others were called, out of the goodness of our own hearts to help her aunt and uncle move - eventhough there's no close relation to them.

it was no biggie..if a friend needs help, im there if available.

so forward to today..i get up at 8am..work till 5pm..expecting a call at 6pm to come move. the call comes at 7pm instead..it's still all good...i had no other plans.
so we move....7-10 with complimentary beverages and pizza.

wasn't that bad..the whole ordeal took about 4hours.

so what's all the ranting and raving about, you ask???

well it was all good till we were finishing up..and one of the uncles helping out (really doing jack-shit but standing at the window and receiving and placing boxes vs actually moving his ass 7 flights and across a parking lot) asks, "so...who's WORKING TOMORROW?"

    i reply, "i am"

    "what time?", the uncle says.

    "8am"

"you call that early?..i work at 5am"

    [editor's note]
first and foremost, where the fuck..and ill repeat, WHERE IN THE FUCK DOES HE GET OFF INSULTING ME?
  • i am not his relative nor family member
  • boo-fucking-hoo: cry me a river and cue the violins, someone...i didn't make your work schedule and demand you promptly be at work at 5am nor did i force you to come and supposedly move - which by his definition is sitting on his ass and smoking/drinking water/trying to be funny like howie mandel or uncle joey
  • i voluntarily helped to move out of my own good ethic
  • i moved more..a lot more objects; with heavier mass; through greater distances in the span of 15minutes than he did the whole 4 hours
  • don't piss off a 22 year old filipino man who has come to help you move right after work eventhough he's tired - i don't give a shit who's tito (uncle) you are or how old you are..or what tacky heart tattoo you have..or what grey cut'off sleeve tshirt youre wearing with your fucking exco jeans - teenage wannabee midlife crisis - immigrant ass has on. i could care less.

where the fuck do you get off, i ask?

    [end editor's note]

me, never being one to bitch and moan replies, "i didn't say it was early, you did"

uncle says, "no i didn't. i asked who's working early tomorrow?" [looks around crowd and fellow family members for support and approval]

    give me a fucking break.
and the next time anyone..yes, anyone, friends included, asks me..out of the goodness and integrity of my, jason ryan de los Reyes', character, to help them move..please, just try and show the least bit of appreciation...just a little bit goes a long way for me....and please...tell your lazy-fucking ass relatives to shut their fucking traps with their comments and assumptions before i punch them in their throat and collapse their trachea.

do not ever mistake my kindness for weakness.

    thank you.
this has been a paid advertisment for jay's "don't manage your anger, but instead, blog your anger" - self-help book and cassette series.

although i am peeved...i dont want my reader's leaving here with a bitter taste in their mouth so instead, ill leave on a humourous note.

if you're filipino, you'll love this...[!]
if you're not filipino but you love me..then you'll still love the fact that i love this...[!]

    thank God im filipino.

    have a nice day.

  • famous lines by iron mike tyson.

but forget about that fool...check out iron rick!!

voting was aite today..not much of a turnout im sure as the lady running the registration and check-in table at the skool where i marked my ballot interrogated me.
i dunno if it's cause she's a middle-aged horndog trying to get into my pants or if i was the first of the so called "youngin's" to vote today at this locale..but hell...i dont need special treatment when i particpate in a democracy. anyhow...my party lost. the liberals are sure to win as at this hour (which isnt bad as long as the conservatives dont win) as we wait for the west coast (bigups to dee and friends - wesssyde!) to cast their ballots.

as for plans after i graduate in the near future..im for sure gonna take a year off and travel.
i feel i'm well-deserving of it, so screw you if u think otherwise.

one thing that imma look into is this internship in either africa or the caribbean.
there, i get to help the locals start up their own educational and sport programs. this should theoretically help better their lives somehow.

i told a few friends about this and they said i should really go for it. i think i will. i'd really like to do something like that plus i get to travel to unknown regions (other than mars..which i cant afford rite now). sounds fulfilling too. but we'll see..it's an option.

back to my point though...other friends, on the other hand, said i'd be their king if i did all that for them. if that happens, and i dont know why it would, i really could care less. can you imagine?? KING JAY: king of the africans?

    yea right....and furthermore...why?

    that's a wrap..gnite.

oh yea..here's the link to that whole internship thing. anyone interested in joining me? i found it on my skool's kinesiology site..and the positions are indeed directed to those in my field..but i think anyone can join...in fact, if you wanna join me and youre not allowed to join..and i get in when i join..then ill press them to get you to join.

    make sense?
probably not...take some time and re-read those sentences again.

    and for real this time...gnite.

y'all get your vote-on today, ya heard!

if you choose not to vote, then you deserve whatever and whichever government we get for the next 4 years..just know that.

that's coming from a discussion last nite i had with my friend and his choice to not vote today. he said they're all liars.

i said, of course theyre all liars...all politicians are liars - but you might as well have a say in which liar runs your life, right?

personally...it's all about the bloc quebecois for me.
    psyche!

    elections.ca

    the liar's club
  • ndp.ca
  • liberal.ca
  • conservative.ca
  • bloc quebecois.org

it's really all about the ndp for me. but then again, at the last minute anything can happen. i might even scratch the names out and add my own name.
you can do the same too and elect me as your brand spankin' new prime minister of canada. whatever the case..get out there and practice your right.

and believe me, im not about to try and make this election and/or voting cool with a rap about voting or a rock ballad saying how 'fuckin' bitchin' it is to vote...just vote. this includes you folk up in nunavut too...i see ya'll!!

  • those are some pretty good points.

after all the hardwork of the day; after all the backbreaking loads; the punches thrown; the miles i run; the retarded drivers i restrain myself from killing; the bad news on tv; the endless video game sessions where i try and save the world from the evil grin of terror; after my shower;the dog-walk; even after the last nite-time bowl of cereal, i like to check my email, play some music (either jazz, downtempo or house, usually) and make an attempt to read..currently it's orwellian mode, but it could be manga, a magazine, university information, a stale newspaper (stale 'cause by this time, it's old news) or various other texts...and as for listening currently, it's le wax before i proceed onto crashing in my bed for the nite.

just thought i'd share that with you since i have really nothing new to write about (wow, that's a first).

Hunted by unspeakable horrors and haunted by your past, you soon discover that in order to overcome evil, you must become more than evil. The only thing that can save you is your darkest power, the ability to transform into a variety of powerful beasts. that's my highschool's motto.

i am aged like a fine wine...
but i tend to smell weird at times so i guess im more like a fine cheese.

here's one of those entries where i get serious again...i hate these ones, dont you? then again..i figure my journal needs some balance every now and then.

so i was flipping through the highschool yearbooks the other day and other than the fact that i dont seem to age (more or less), i've been looking like im 20 years old for the last 5 years which is funny considering that at times i act like im 30 and other times more would say im a 10 year old. but anyhow...it goes back to why do people call me out of nowhere?

and in relation to that, why do people think they can just get back in the loop like everything's 'hunky-dorey'. sure, im the type that i can pick up with an old friend right where we left off like it was yesterday...but this applies to most..yes, i mean most people, not all. so as i was saying, i flipped through all 4 year books of highschool and skimmed everyone's picture deciding who was relevant in my life and who wasnt..and who the hell that person was...and where are they now...and how many kids does she have by now?...and how much weed has so and so passed through their bodies since then.

a few minutes ago, i grabbed a coffee and saw my old ex-best friend in a parking lot. we exchanged glimpses for a second - nothing provoking nor inviting...it was just a glance and although i dont know exactly where this entry is going or where im going with it, i think id like to believe and make it clear that i dont intend to make peace or mend friendships or relationships unless other halves are willing to put in as much as i am. cause face it, a lot does and will happen in the span of 4 years - which is where the graduating class of 2000 stands now..and in all honesty, if we havnt talked since then and if there has been no efforts made on either party's side then really...you or me have no value in the bearing or well-being of one another's lives. so with that said, to all i've lost contact with, not cause i haven't made efforts - cause we all know i do make my efforts 200%, but really 'cause youre too proud, i say....

    good riddance to bad rubbish.

    not bitter...never bitter.
just growing up and moving on. and believe me everyone, when you learn to do this..and you are able to refine this skill, you'll notice there are many more interesting people out there in the world just waiting to bless you with their presence just as you are to them.

(did that even make any sense?)

i've surpassed all this juvenile shit ..and at this age, i really dont tolerate dead weight.

    [never bitter...just melon]

p.s. damn some people don't physically age graciously. wow.

    $450 due in t - 3 (business days)

gatdamn enrolment deposits!! i hate them with a passion.
and who could forget last year, around this time?
and why is it $450??!! ever since they changed it last year to 450 from 200, i've had to jump my ass around - either working or borrowing or cash-advancing just to come up with it! ugh!
can you imagine? there are roughly 41,000 students that make up the population at my university. everyone enrols in the month of june (more or less) and is expected to pay his cash within 5 business days (as you can see from the title) of their enrolment.

    now take 41,000 scholars, multiply that by $450 a pop....*blah blah blah..drop the zero's...blah blah*..that's $18,450,000!!!

    yes, i said
    $18,450,000!!
from enrolment deposit fees in a matter of 4 weeks alone!

now couple that with tuition fees ranging from roughly $5000 to $20 000/year depending on your major and whether your an undergrad or graduate student!! can you believe that??!!

that math is too much to do in the span of me typing this entry..but hey..that's alot of cash we're talkin!!
and then you wonder why there's always these rallies by students in canada to freeze tuition fees. and then you wonder why i say to all of you..get out there and vote over the next couple of weeks so we can hopefully get some changes goin.
and then you wonder why universities fees are privatized and can dictate however much you have to pay every year for skool regardless of your financial situation. and then you wonder why i gotta work my ass off every summer just to put my ass in an institution that robs my ass. and then you wonder why, on my backpack i not only have a button that says "FREEZE TUITION FEES", obtained from the federation of students at my skool, but rather screams, "LOWER TUITION FEES"!! but i really shouldn't bitch and moan...our american cousins have it significantly worse..and besides, the majority of their skools aren't up to par with ours..so yea...i really shouldnt bitch. but if i do bitch, you'll notice the thought will suddenly be extinguished before it even jumps off my tongue and slides off my lips. why?...
    cause i love my program!
    -quote the dork of york.

    anyhow...with that off my chest...

...according to york U's Registration and Enrolment Module (a defunked name - i.e. ceasing to exist) and by the will of my own hand, [i am]currently (and happily) enrolled in:

    • Ethics for Kinesiology and Health
This course provides grounding in ethical theories and approaches, and applies ethical paradigms to issues in kinesiology and health science. Two lecture hours and one seminar hour per week. One term.
      why?
ethics! i need to be ethical! whether i end up doing rehab or sports medicine or ergonomics or teaching..and especially in research, i gotta have my ethics straight. p.s. there goes the cloning of the 6-headed lizard baby right out the window. crap.

    • Psychology of Health & Chronic Disease
This course explores the role of psychological variables in the development, progression and treatment of chronic diseases such as coronary heart disease, cancer and AIDS. Other critically reviewed topics include stress, substance abuse (smoking and alcohol), and injury and violence. Three lecture hours per week. One term.
      why?
b-b-b-bird course! and of course..im interested. duh.

    • Swimming I
an introduction to the fundamentals of stroke technique for front crawl, back crawl, elementary backstroke, breastroke and sidestroke. non-swimmers are encouraged to enrol as this course will focus on deep water skills and safety requirements.
      why?
i need my practical kine courses to graduate -which i'll never complain about considering that in my 3 past years i've been fortunate to take and learn the finer points of strength training, men's gymnastics, european handball, yoga, tai chi, ballroom dancing and track & field at no cost. and being that im almost done, im psyched! im down to my last 3: this swimming plus emergency care & first aid plus golf a week before skool.
this fall, i can hardly wait to get my ass into the pool every tuesday and thursday morning. whatta way to start your day! besides, ill still have my summer body intact vs if i had taken it in the winter..and think about it, 'cause i have...Christmas...during the bitter cold canadian months here..into a pool? that ain't right. although the fat content of myself during those months would help me be the more buoyant human floatation device.

    • Rock and Popular Music
This course explores in-depth from both a musicological and sociological perspective the range of Euro-American popular musics as well as some styles of British popular music that have come into existence since the end of the Second World War. Designed for students not majoring or minoring in music.
      why?
i really wanted the hip hop r'n'b and funk one. im not so much into rock..but hey, im willing to learn. and besides, my friend is taking this course and it's his last year..he's into rock...so i might as well relish these last moments to fuck around during class...and hey, it's an elective..then again, all of my courses are electives..but i meant it's a non-kine elective!! that's grounds to really fuck around. woohaaaaaa!

    • Physiological Basis of Fatigue
An in-depth examination of the physiological processes that limit muscular exercise. Topics include cellular and metabolic failure in sustained muscular contractions, central nervous system limitations, substrate depletion and product accumulation, body fluid shifts and adaptations that forestall fatigue. Three lecture hours per week. One term.
      why?
although extremely hard, im hoping it's dr. hood teaching it, that's all. he's the best overall. a few years ago, you could say that roy jones jr. was the best pound-for-pound boxer regardless of weight class. well...dr.hood, by no means not limited to physiology, is the best prof in my book overall.

      [click me or die]

raise the roof for my prof!!

[yanno, i once thought..but no way...no effin way!
      yer clownin' me.]

      moving on...

    • Exercise and Addictive Behaviours
This course examines a variety of topics in the area of exercise and health psychology with a particular emphasis on the adaptive and maladaptive aspects of exercise, as well as on issues concerning body image, food intake and eating disorders. Three lecture hours per week. One term.
      why?
(see psych of health blurb above in relation to)
sounds easy. bird courses are a green light from me. and besides, anything to boost that GPA..anything!

yea, that's all. im looking to add a course or two more..but oh well. i have too many electives to take till i graduate, so i might as well spread them out into next summer...and possibly a semester??

It is evident that socially constructed ideas of how the body should look greatly affect the mentality and well-being of women. Mass media depictions of ‘supposed’ femininity act to oppress females, both young and old in an attempt to keep the audience in tune and ‘tuned-in’ to what is acceptable and not acceptable in today’s society. The sudden influx of fitness participation and ‘healthy eating’, a common euphemism for “dieting”, can be attributed to the increased demand of western culture’s slenderness ideal by the media and fitness-based corporations. Most companies swarm the consumer and create new fitness-oriented demographics as a means of profit. Although such guidelines govern their bodies, ideologies dictating the physical form are not exclusive to females. Males, too, are increasingly being led to believe that they must live up to certain standards of masculine appearance. Once these paradigms are addressed and studied, for both sexes, in greater detail, society will be able to solve the advancement of clinical eating disorders and body dissatisfaction. Until then, the minds, in addition to the bodies, of present and future generations will continually degenerate and be at stake.

    pt. VII

Special groups that must be addressed are athletes and their experiences with meeting society’s expectations of what the physical form must look like.
Many sports are heavily influenced by society’s slenderness ideal. Although most sports require a certain level of body fat to muscle ratio for mechanical and physiological efficiency, there are other sports which have scoring factors directed mainly toward physical appearance and aesthetic. A study conducted on college cheerleaders revealed that females and males were expected to fit into socially-constructed groupings which define what it means to be feminine and masculine (Reel & Gill, 1998, p.83). Females were expected to be slender and strong. However, tall and heavy participants were excluded from ever joining the team. Males on the other hand were expected to be “extremely masculine”, with well, muscularly-defined bodies. As a result, skinny, short males were barred participation from the team’s activities. It is no surprise that coaches, in this study, under varying environments and differing schools, pressured their female athletes to lose weight in addition to their male athletes gaining weight. It is clear that there is an underlying requirement for college cheerleaders to meet what has been socially demanded on their bodies. Males are supposed to be bigger than females. They should be able to ‘look’ strong and supportive for their female team members. Although a short, slim male would easily be able to lift the small, minutely-massive frame of their female partner with the same ease as their tall, muscular counterparts, these males are refused participation. Similarly, females are expected to be slim and small in stature. This enforces the ideal that femininity equates to slenderness. And although ‘strong’ male cheerleaders would be able to lift tall and heavy females, if matched appropriately according to weight and strength capabilities, these ‘unconventional’ body types like their short and skinny male counterparts are outcast from enjoying competition. Mind you, the restrictions, of individuals who do not meet the ‘ideal’ male and female body type, are in place as a means of enforcing and showing exactly what a man or a woman should look like and how a man and woman should interact with each other. Because cheerleading displays are usually in the view of large crowds, the societal ideologies surrounding the male and female body are dictated and reinforced to the audience. Like cheerleading, differences in expectations among gymnasts and figure skaters, both male and female, are similarly oppressive. In all cases, the male and female forms are required to act and look masculine and feminine as imposed by western beliefs.
Finally, a special group of individuals who deserve special investigation are female bodybuilders. Because this sport is based solely on aesthetic, individuals are judged dependant on components such as: muscular mass, muscular definition and body symmetry. Often to ‘make gains’ and succeed in these areas, athletes engage in abnormal fitness routines and diet regimens. In severe cases, bodybuilders turn to the aid of anabolic steroids and growth hormone to accelerate unnatural muscle hypertrophy and therefore, desired results. As stated earlier, in affluent western culture, muscularity is associated with masculinity. Where, then, do female bodybuilders place themselves along the continuum of the idealized gendered body? In this sport, according to Gohan, many female participants use bodybuilding as a tool of empowerment (Gohan, 2002, p.415). The reasoning behind this mentality is that by increasing mass and definition in their muscles, these females are breaking away from the social guidelines of how a female form should appear. Instead of the conventional “model” type, with their frail stature, minimal muscle and fat or the “athletic” type with their ‘toned’, undefined bodies, female bodybuilders shape and form their physical selves into what is usually considered masculine. In a sense, bodybuilding for these women “symbolically challenges the male monopoly of physicalities” (Gohan, 2002, p.418). In actuality, however, there is a strong contradiction for women who participate in bodybuilding competition. Because ‘pose-offs’ are a means of displaying the body to the judges, and what are predominately male audiences, the female bodybuilder’s form is objectified, rather than applauded for its capabilities and strength. The showcasing and display of the female form to a male audience, as is the case in female bodybuilding, swimsuit contests and beauty pageants, reasserts the gender order. Women are held subordinate to males and in effect, seek approval from men through the advertisement of their body. Also, female bodybuilders are pressured to wear make-up, style their hair, and perform their ‘pose-offs’ in a dance-like, ‘feminine’ manner. In this case, rather than breaking away from social constructs that dictate the shape and manner of the female form, women’s bodybuilding enforces it. It is clear, therefore, that bodybuilding for women is not counter-hegemonic. It, too, reasserts and defines social ideologies of what the physical form of men and women should look like.

In addition to the excessive preoccupation of exercise that many participate in, a considerable amount of men and women take part in diet and dietary supplemental practices. According to Krane’s study, eating for most exercising women represents something other than proper nutrition. Rather, eating, for this population, symbolizes self-esteem and personal regard (Krane et al., 2001, p. 25). Being able to control what goes into the body and the amount consumed, provides a sense of control and empowerment. From the perspective of an overweight individual, fasting and starvation are quick, but dangerous means of obtaining power through the mind where power over the body appears to be out of their control. When coupled with exercise, this becomes extremely demanding for the individual who seeks the perfect ideal body. Krane further states that eating and exercise are symbiotically related for these individuals. That is, for these people, a greater amount of eating is offset by a greater amount of exercise. In addition, a greater amount of food consumption, and in most cases, binge-eating, can be justified by an excessive amount of exercise, whether prior to or following the meal. It is clear how easily dieting and exercise eventually become an obsessive means of obtaining society’s perfect physical shape.

In relation, males, too, have been targets of magazine culture. It is a rare occurrence that walking by a magazine stand, one will fail to see a normal representation of what an average male body looks like. Instead, overly-developed muscular men, usually with bikini-draped female counterparts, are found gracing the covers of male fitness and bodybuilding magazines. This sounds two messages to the onlooker: first, in order to be a real man, you must be a finely chiseled, muscled man. Next, in order to be sexually attractive to females, you must have big strong “lats” (back muscles) and well-developed “bi’s and tri’s” (arm muscles). Evidently, magazines such as SHAPE and Vogue, targeted towards their youthful and mature demographic respectively, prey on the insecure and impressionable female mind while FLEX and MUSCLEMAG targets males.
The above two trends in media also facilitate a third in today’s society. This is the preoccupied obsession with fitness and diet. It has puzzled many as to why over the past few decades, males and females have increased their attendance in gyms. Based on numerous studies available, physical activity is advisable for long life and health. But in reality, surely not everyone is partaking in exercise for the sole purpose of obtaining optimal health. A large percentage of the individuals in gyms across North America exercise for aesthetic purposes; which brings into account, once again, the role of the magazine and mass media. Onlookers, who see the happy, slim woman on the cover of SHAPE or the well-defined muscled man of Muscle and Fitness magazine, immediately relate physical fitness with happiness. The magazine companies understand this mentality and therefore make money off impressionable and fragile minds who seek self-satisfaction. Because the “Twenty-minute Glute Workout” in SHAPE and the “One-Helluva Chest Routine” outlined in Muscle and Fitness are regimens that will enable a reader to obtain body satisfaction, individuals blindly buy into their insecurities while magazine publication companies continually reveal both the problem and supposed ‘solution’ to obtaining the “perfect” physical form. In actuality, the propagation of such false ideals, dictating what the body should or should not be, increase profits on the publisher’s part while holding the reader’s mentality in low regard.

In order to support societal standards of how the body should look, it is evident that now more than ever, mediums are promoting criterion of the slender look. First, magazines are increasingly becoming a medium by which people gain trustworthy advice and knowledge from. One example of this is how the female fitness magazine “SHAPE” enforces slim ideals. Markula illustrates how SHAPE’s section entitled “Success Stories” urges weight loss. This section often promotes the idea that in order to be happy, one must change from fat and unhealthy to thin and healthy (Markula, 1995, p. 432). Obviously, this creates oppressive disciplinary control over women. In order to be happy, women are left to believe that they must be thin. Rather than stressing the reality of the issue, which is: in order to be thin, you first have to address and improve issues of self-esteem, SHAPE magazine swaps this order and imposes that a woman will not be happy until she loses excess weight. As a result, females are left to believe that thin is happiness. As stated previously, magazines are a source of trustworthy information for many people. They mould one’s sense of perception. Unless a person understands the psychology of weight loss, which most of the general population does not, there is a failure of skepticism on the part of the reader to understand that in actuality, being happy first is a means of being thin. Guillen and Barr conducted a study based on the popular adolescent magazine called “Seventeen” (also known as the ‘best friend’ of high-school girls in the United States). Their findings illustrated that between 1970 and 1990, the magazine “greatly contributed to the current cultural trend of thinness” expected by women whether they be adults or adolescents (Guillen & Barr, 1994, p. 465). Clearly, magazines have and continue to impact the fragile, impressionable minds of females in developed, affluent societies.

Although females have stringent demands as to what their body should look like, males, too, have aesthetic guidelines through which they assert their masculinity. Like their female counterparts, there exists an idealization of slenderness among males. Similar to the female situation, slenderness is associated with happiness and success. However, this ideal for males, and females alike, is not a universal belief shared around the world. Rothblum states that in developing countries such as Puerto Rico, India, China and the Philippines, an increased standard of living is commonly associated with being overweight. In such cases, excess weight shows that one is able to splurge and eat in excess (Rothblum, 1990, p. 120). From this instance, it is clear that the ideal of slenderness is exclusive to affluent western culture, both for men and women.
The main ideal that most men aspire to be is the “muscular” ideal. Having well-developed chest, arm and shoulder muscles, coupled with a narrow waist is associated with positive personality traits, according to Grogan (Grogan, 1999, p. 59). Especially in western culture, there appears to be an intimate relationship between one’s muscularity and masculinity. Strength, power and aggression combine everything it means to be male. Often, such traits are associated with being active, capable of fighting and most importantly, being able to provide – a trait that has been defining masculinity since the early hunter-gatherer period. In this case, it is no wonder why males choose to assert their masculinity through the appearance of their body. According to Klein, a large percentage of men deal with their personal flaws and insecurities through the conveyance of masculinity in their body (Klein, 1993, p.4). Muscles, in particular are a means of compensating for areas that men feel they lack in, whether it be relationship, career or intellectually related. Klein further emphasizes that it can easily be argued that “every man determines his sense of self through some sort of response to the biological emblems of masculinity: possessing a penis and male musculature” (Klein, 1993, p.4). In a sense, building the body up to have big muscles for the main purpose of “being big” rather than obtaining health benefits, parallels bragging about the size of grants won or the number of books one has published. In all cases, the male psyche finds the most effective means of asserting masculinity that best suits him. It is clear that ideals exist on what a male and female form should look like. With the main ideologies of the physical form established, it is now important to discuss the current trends that are the result of such ideals.

    pt. II

Before understanding media’s effects on the female and male body, it is important to recognize exactly what the media’s definition of the ideal body is.
Through the enforcement of numerous mediums, it is clear that the physical form acts to define gendered ideologies. It appears that in affluent western culture, there is a highly shared belief that slenderness equates to happiness. Encouraging this notion is the fashion “model” ideal body type. Markula, through the paper “Aerobicizing Female Bodies”, emphasizes that “although women come in all shapes and sizes, [the model body type] is the only ideal emphasized [in society]” (Markula, 1995, p.431). It is clear that Markula’s study, and others conducted, enforce the fact that the female body is narrowly viewed. The slim, emaciated female form is a standard that many females strive to attain. Regardless of one’s genetic predisposition of how their mature body composition might be, many women are instilled with the strong belief that failing to conform to this slender “model” ideal results in numerous negative social implications. Since the end of the last century, being overweight or with ‘excess flesh’ was associated with having low morals which, in turn, “reflected personal inadequacy or lack of will” (Bordo, 1993, p. 190). Due to such a high standard, women often feel incompetent if they fail to meet this expectation. Many often realize that this is an unattainable goal. However, most women rarely reach a sense of body satisfaction. It is obvious that being overweight meant being outcast during the conclusion of the last century. Although not explicitly stated in present time, this ideal still thrives and sounds in the minds of many women.
Another ideal body type placed upon females in western society is the “athletic” body type. This standard emphasizes one to be fit in every sense. Belief in this ideal compels females to be lean but not fat, and toned but not muscular. Such a definition of the ideal body is paradoxical. Can a body be toned without being muscular? According to a study conducted by Macguire based on female participation in aerobics, women were asked to describe what they desired their ideal body type to look like. Responses such as wanting to be “toned but not big like a man” and “shapely, but not defined” (Macguire, 1998, p. 115) were common. This shows that, even without a definition given as to what differentiated “toned” from “muscular”, women were able to make definite distinctions. This reveals that in western culture, it is advised for women to exercise so long as there is no build up of musculature, which is obviously impossible. To partake in physical activity means to reduce body fat and therefore increase muscle visibility and mass. The “athletic” standard, in this sense, represses women by ensuring they meet strict guidelines without crossing them. Also, the fit, athletic type female body goes beyond the “model” ideal with an increased demand. Aside from simply dieting, as is the case with the “model” ideal, the “athletic” ideal requires women to diet and exercise. This places greater disciplinary demands on the female who aspires to fit into the “athletic” ideal. Both the “model” and “athlete” ideals of society act to set guidelines on how females value their physical self.

To find peace and satisfaction in life is a long journey that both males and females undertake. Constantly, individuals try to put meaning and value on the lives they live. The worth of one’s self can be perceived through things such as occupation, annual income, relationships, education and even type of clothing, to name a few.
In today’s society, a prominent component of self worth is often perceived through body image. It is through the shape, size and appearance of the body that onlookers construct judgments on how well a person takes care of themselves, the state of health they are in and the amount of self-control that one disciplines their physical self with. Such criticisms from society greatly influence whether a person obtains self-satisfaction or not. But really, who is to say what the ideal body should or should not look like? Surely, the loving care of a parent would never dictate how the fragile mind of a child perceives value when looking at the reflection in the mirror. Maybe it stems back to the teachers. However, when analyzed carefully, it is evident that most teachers are not in such a position to criticize the body and, therefore, abstain from such practices that would jeopardize their career. Unfortunately, in some cases, the above two instances do take place. Although these two factors are very influential in forming one’s self-satisfaction with the body, they are not the only ones. There is an even greater force at hand in society; a force that not only guides the lives of children exclusively, but also adults, often to a higher extent. This highly controlling force is called media. Through the following text, it will be illustrated that in western culture, media heavily dictates how people perceive and shape their bodies.

lines burned into my head ever since i watched fight club a few years back.
and really, nobody could've phrased it better than tyler durgen himself.

go watch the movie...and youll understand.
im not one to literally live by movies..but applying what he said sticks with me for some reason.
i've been training...weight lifting/other 'aesthetic' forms of activity since the ripe age of 17..and i used to frequent the nearest community ymca for the last 5 years - till that all ended last summer.

    now...
let's just forget im a kinesiologist major for one second. let's forget that i've read the literature...and let's forget that all of this health and fitness stuff, which might be rubbish to you, is really what my whole life revolves around. let's forget all of that for one moment..and let's just consider that im (err was) an ordinary teen at the age of 17 simply working out.

now...let's forward to the year 2004...im now 22 years old. same stuff...forget all of the above. i have seen changes in the frequency of "gym-rats" and "the hardcore" and "the tourists"...believe me. itd be false on my part to say that i haven't seen growth in both teen girls and boys (ie adolescents). and although i believe that all of this working out is good..and beneficial, i do believe it's all for the wrong reasons.

ok...now forget what i just told you to forget.

now...remember and recognize that i have dedicated the last 4 years of my young precious life to health and fitness - both through study, participation and informing.
let's recognize that yes, i have put in the endless hours of reading several different sources; from your local drugstore magazines to your medical journals, scientific dissertations, surveys & studies, nutrition labels, fad-diet books, text books and lab manuals. let's recognize all of this.
further, let's recognize the fact that i dont like to fuck around when it comes to this area...it's not all that i got, but i do take it very seriously and it's what i plan on dedicating my life's work to for the next 60 years or so (God-willing), so you know damn well i aint one to spit some shit that i read from musclemag or rumour overheard at some nearby gym. yes, id like to believe what i have to say has some real cred.

with that said, i felt it was important to present to you, what i feel and what i've researched to be the honest truth about why the majority of the population stays fit.
being that summer's just around the corner, and being that more and more people ('the tourists'), most likely including you, will be frequenting gyms and adhereing to their daily workout rituals & diets just to have the 'desired' look within a month, well...i just had to make an attempt in trying to make those of you reading this attach some sort of meaning to your workouts other than 'looking good'. we all should workout to feel good and functionally be healthy.

i cannot..i repeat, cannot stress the word 'function' enough (do it for your heart - the most important muscle of all). hence, please workout to feel good INSIDE rather than primarily trying to look like 'the shit'.
believe me, if you do this, your workouts and bouts of physical activity will have more meaning to you in the future and not simply be just some 'summer-only' past-time.
it's important to me that you all make this a life-long thing..but enough of this sappy corny, fitness-preachy blasphemy....

    ...read on tourists...read on.

so without further ado, divided into several parts for your reading pleasure (and also cause i dont know how to convert anything into PDF format) an all rights reserved winter term paper entitled:

    Ideologies of the Body:
Media's Dictation of the Physical Form

balls to you, york U; you keep on fucking with me.
    [grrrrr]

today my enrolment window opened at 2pm. because i worked today..and i really needed my full shift, i said to myself, "hey jay...fuck going home at 2 so you can enrol..work the extra hour and make that extra 12 bucks".
so i worked...but all through the day, all i could think of was getting my ass enrolled into the classes that i had in mind. you see...it's an enrolment window. every student at my skool has a different time and day when their enrolment window opens.
    mine happened to be today.

the funny thing is..i finished paying all of last year's tuition last week. and although the rule of thumb at my skool is to pay all your debt and clear all standing balance towards my greedy skool...they still wouldn't let me enrol today!

that's my point..this is the root of my frustration today...
    i couldn't even enrol!!
i couldn't even enrol in anything!!

a guy pays his dues...works his ass off...takes several hours just to get the perfect schedule going along with backup plans...and they don't even let me enrol!!

even if they offered catshit cleaning 1890 or nailcutting 3976..i still wouldn't be able to get in!!

    crap.

but back to the point...since, as i stated earlier, it's a first come, first serve basis....if i dont get into my particular 4th year...and very small classes (30 students roughly) due to this here mishap..then yes...ill say it again..for this instance....

    imma go apeshit!!!!

    pass the bananas!

i just slept for 4 hours - considering what time i came home last nite.
so much for me remembering to flick my blinds shut; the sun ended up waking my ass up as it's blazing through my window as i type this..but yea...on to my conclusion..and connection to my last post below...

they were all guys last nite!!
    that must be it!
    must be!
    (right, rj? hahahahhaha)

ok, back to bed...or run... or read this book that i just noticed over top on my computer desk entitled "the case for Christ".
i picked it up, actually was handed it on campus during first year's frosh festivities (can you believe it's been 3 years already?? wtf!!!). anyhow, i just skimmed through it. sounds like a book that i'd read while on the crapper. my house needs magazines and books in our washrooms. i like when i go to my friends' washrooms and they got british fhm...some cosmo...and audio/video magazines..very informative.

in my case, i might just plant this book in the downstairs john.
i really dont know why books like this are handed off to catholics like me and other catholics..not to mention other followers of other branches of Christianity.

itll solidify your belief about the Lord....but it's faith!
if you believe...and you have faith...then i honestly don't feel there's a need for scientific and tangible evidence such as this book trying to convince me.
this goes for all forms of religion and spirtuality.
some things are meant to be unexplained, yet believed. this is faith, the unknowing but all believing.

there will always be that sense of divine mystery behind religion and spirituality which is why we have it to guide us. so let's just leave it at that, shall we?

do all the proving or disproving you want...my level of faith hasn't been tweaked.
and as far as im concerned....some things dont require scientific evidence or an explanation.
that's why it's called faith and not knowing.

and really...they should've gave this book to 'non-believers'. i really think those folks are who this literature is targeted towards. but then again...those Christian scholars probably were handing them out to 'prospects' and in my case...me, being the cheap-ass i am...figured, "hey, free!"..which is why i grabbed this $8.99 (canadian dollars) book for free. and now that i think about it...i honestly believe that's why i also took the free copy of "towards understanding Islam". ahhhh, enlightenment.
    yes...that, too,

    must be it!

and please, keep your "preach on brotha" comments to yourself. i really dont like preaching. if i did, id be a televangelist..and hey, youd all probably tune in to watch me sweat and make people faint..and ask for your financial support to fund my tacky gold jewellery, pseudo-coiffe and my outdated suit while i have this really desperate facial expression, all moaning and groaning.

but yea...dont take that as preaching. i wasnt trying to convince anyone of any faith. i was just explaining my faith's intent.
it's early and hey..that was just a simple public announcement to start your day off right.

    GOOD MORNING, GOD!

(*known/tangible/unfortunate to know me - friends* by the way...there are filipino independence day festivities today...holla back if ya'll wanna head down later.)

so after lying in my bed..staring at the dark ceiling...lying in my sweat..i decided to surf around.
i came across an old friend's blog...and i found it quite interesting.

i dont see why everyone's tripping here round my hood.
and why is everyone pumping their A/C's? fuck...the first day of the year the temp climbs above 30 degrees celsius and everyone is suddenly "boiling" to death.

remember, airconditioning is a luxury not a right.
true, some people die from heat stroke..and asthma related causes..but shit...the chances of that happening compared to freezing to death (i.e. why heating in canada is a right not a luxury vs its a/c counterpart) are very remote (for most). anyhow..i guess im just mad that everyone wants to turn on their a/c.

    but why..you might ask...didnt i tell you?
i made a personal promise to myself NOT TO voluntarily turn on the a/c until july. and slowly..im thinking of pushing that date till august. but let it be known, if anyone in my house wants to turn it on..then hey, i aint one to complain. like i said, VOLUNTARILY..and PERSONALLY. i cant emphasize that enough. i just wanna get back to pre-a/c days in my home..when we'd live through the sweltering, thick-air conditions, that's all. we've been spoiled. and shit..i just wanna save some cash that's all. eventhough im not the one paying the bills..i think it's nice to budget wherever possible.
and for fuck's sake...the weather's like this BECAUSE us humans use our air-cons in the first place. and i could go on and on about the effects of polluting our air..and burning fossil fuels..but frankly, i dont give a shit at this hour of the nite. so yea...no a/c for me till july.

tell the carrier man to fuck off.

    [weak]

tests id like you to try:

    1. try a week without adding additional salt to your food.
    2. try no air conditioning till july.

get back to me if you do..or attempt to.

aside from that..here are some articles i like.

that's just me taking a page out of indian and thai cuisine.
    dont mind me.

i don't think my bbc radio and i can ever part. i really don't.

    teacher to pupil.

    RE: hey dr. malszecki!!!

Jason, you are so right to question that grade. Actually, what I submitted
    goes like this: Test #1: 17.75/20, Test #2: 15.2/20, Debate: 20/25, Essay
    27.5/35 =80.4 or A. NOT F!!!

I am sending along the request for the change back to the official correct
grade tonight, so let me know when you get notified. It is a mystery how that
got twisted, but I appreciate your kind and gracious query.

I am like you hoping to get in some physical activity bouts, but definitely
need more sunshine and less water and certainly no Little Ice Ages wrapping us
    up in sweaters in May/June.

I loved your participation in that class, and just know you will have a blast
sharing your provocative knowledge with friends and foes in gatherings over
the next few years whenever the topic turns to sport or gender.

Anyway, all best wishes in all your endeavours. Thanks for bringing this to
my attention. Be well, enjoy it all, and have fun while pursuing optimal
health in a world where all live as equals.
    Respectfully,

    Greg M.

    booya!

    today was a long one...

like those giant pogos you get at the fair...with the mustard. yea, that long.

it started off early...and i mean early by getting my ass out of bed, missing a day's work to get my ass over to york u and pay my bills. mind you, by the time my enrolment window online opens in 2 weeks, i will have just finished paying LAST YEAR'S tuition. following that day's enrolment for next year...not more than a second later, i will have to drop $450 as a deposit towards next year's educational session over at my skool. so you see, every penny...every ounce of sweat...blood...and everything i earn...not very much goes into my pocket. instead, it goes right into york u's pocket. but i cant complain...skool here is significantly cheaper than our american counterparts. and hey..i keep telling myself, if i pay my own way to put my ass in a seat at skool...then itll mean all the more to me and in the long run, ill appreciate all of this all the better (hopefully).

so bills paid somewhat...more payments to come. all good right?

wrong. remember that email i sent a few days ago??
well he didnt reply. but then again, i heard he took a leave of absence for the summer...whether that's true or not, i hope my prof is in good health. but ill say it again, i DID NOT get a reply.
so i visit the kinesiology and health science office at my skool...ask them what's the deal...and those fuckers at front desk have no idea what's goin on in terms of WHAT'S GOIN ON!
    what the hell is that?
further, they asked me if i was enrolled in the course!! can you believe the nerve? calm and collected, i's replies "yes" and indeed, they found my file. of course i was enrolled in that course. you think i do the assignments and sit in class for shits and giggles? geez. eventually, the people at front desk apologized and explained that "we possibly forgot to enter your mark for that course. [we] just bubbled it and shortly, your mark will be entered and your transcript will be revised".

    my thoughts...

    it better be revised or
    imma go apeshit!

    and i mean apeshit!

and that's what happened at skool today.

    (end skool entry)

    later that day...

i headed downtown with the boys and walked around, caused a ruckus and just acted like the boisterous selves that we be.

    all was good.
good buys...good stores...good shawarma for lunch...but one thing on my mind all day was to get my ass down to chinatown, cop a couple vietnamese subs and possibly a chinese pastry or two. shit..maybe even some white rabbits, shrimp chips or haw flakes.

    but nooooooo!!
did i get the 3 subs that i had in mind?
according to my self-alotted budget for the day...i could not afford the 3 subs that i had in mind.

    why??
cause the price inflated to a $1.50 from $1.00 price tag since the last time i went!
crap. that means i could only buy 2 subs..NOT 3!
for the whole day..walking my ass around..for 3 subs..and it turns out..i could only buy 2!

    dear vietnamese viewers...

why the hell you wanna gouge my eyes out?!!
what's the deal with the inflation on your tasty subs????

are my roots not from humble beginnings thousands of miles away like you?
do we not sleep in mosquito nets also? or plough the rice fields with our water buffalo and oxen? have my forefathers not evolved and lived off the same pacific ocean and slum-muddied water like you have???

then why have you inflated your prices by 50%???!! why? why, i ask?
    whyyyyyyyy???

im playing. why would you know? why would anyone know? maybe it's the gas prices...or the full moon tonite..possibly the cold rainy weather we have here in ontario. who knows?

all i knows is the fact that i was only able to eat 2 subs and not 3.
    sadness.

    it's all good though.
    but really..no, it aint. a buck-fifty???!! geez.
    good nite.

    banh mi???

    banh YOU, man!!

remember how i stated my hatred towards girls who slouch?
well as i logged onto my computer just now, my msn homepage had this article about flat bellies (can a "belly" really be flat?). it's not so much that i frown upon girls who slouch, or how it illustrates a sense of insecurity or something along those lines..i just honestly care about their back health. every so often...i tend to look at people as they were skeletons. therefore, if i see a chick hunched over..well...to me, i see a bending tree branch ready to snap.

but anyhow...that article that i saw, gets the thumbs up for me.
so for your own good, please ladies, pull those shoulders back, jut out those boobies, and take care of your backs! geez.

    bill's a breast man.
    jack's an assman.
    gary's a leg man.

jay...that fucking weirdo likes proper gait and perfect posture.
