paul walks into the store and brings a soccer ball up to the shopkeeper. the shopkeeper asks, "is this a gift?". paul replies, "yea, i guess you can say that. it's for a special friend".
the scene then forwards to paul one late evening at the gate of a mansion. he places the ball inside the perimeter of the wall. following, he pulls out what appears to be a very crudely-designed remote control - something very similar to a tyco remote control toy car. he directs the control's antenna towards the soccer ball. through precise design and strategy, the ball begins to roll and set off the mansion's sensor lights in addition to alarming the area's motion detectors and owner's alertness. the camera then pans to the owner coming out of the house with gun in hand - hunting for the intruder. paul waits in the shadows of the nearby gate. the mansion owner, with relief, finds that a mere soccer ball is responsible for the false alarm. but you're left to ask yourself, "is it really a false alarm, you scumbag?".
upon seeing the mansion owner/bad guy with the soccer ball in hand, paul shouts, "here's a little present; it should cure your dandruff problem".
"noooooo!!" and other similar pleas of desperation can be heard on the owner's part. paul then flicks a switch on his remote device and the ball explodes in the villain's hands. paul watches in satisfaction as the opposition runs around in desperation and agony until finally succumbing to his death.
this is
deathwish V: the face of death.
and this was on
toronto one this evening.
to me, there's something about charles bronson that makes him the epitome of action film. when i was young, i used to think, for whatever reasons (most likely his slant-eyes) that charles bronson was part chinese; that was the cool thing about him through my eyes. only recently (4 years ago) i found out that he was actually part native-american (close enough). my point is, for so many years of growing up and watching his deathwish series, i thought charles was the greatest asian superstar since bruce lee. although i was mistaken in my hunch, i still love charles bronson and his timeless movies. not only did he define and glorify what a true vigiliante is and should be, he made it entertaining and brilliant. when you think of the word '
vigilante', you probably think of some scruffy man with a sleevless jean jacket and aviator sunglasses (probably something like the image of
kurt russell b.k.a. "snake plissken" from escape from l.a.). unfortunately for you neanderthals, you're wrong in doing so. a true vigilante will ingeniously fight crime because he knows that criminals deserve the most agonzing and terrible deaths; a true vigilante will make a serial rapist or crack dealer wish his father had doubled-wrapped his twinkie the night he was fooling around with his mother in his parents' chevy after the movie.
mr. charles bronson
is this true vigilante.
for this, we thank you charles "bronson" buchinski (r.i.p. 1921-2003), wherever you may be
(although im sure they don't need vigilantes up in heaven).
