Elementary and Recreational Games – Lesson Plan
Instructor: Deb
Jason D. & Andrew K.
Date: March 22, 2005
Grade/Age Level: Grade 7/8
--> Circle GamesElectricity The group sits in a circle holding hands while someone sits in the center. The game commences with one person proclaiming that they are going to send a charge to the person beside them and proceeds to squeeze the hand of their neighbour. The person in the middle tries to figure out where the current is. If successful, he exchanges places with the immediate sender of the charge.
SausageEveryone sits in a circle. The person who is it stands in the center of the circle. Each person asks the person who is "it" an appropriate question. The only answer to every question can be sausage. The first person to make the center person laugh wins a try in the middle (Ex: What color is your hair? “Sausage”. What do you brush your teeth with? “Sausage”).
--> Warm upEquipment: skipping ropes
Warm up is lead by instructor/chosen person. Everyone will jump rope for 20-30 jumps (jumps vary throughout warm up) and then switch to instructed exercise or stretch for desired amount of repetitions/seconds. Everyone then goes back to skipping for 30 and thereafter, stretching and exercising again until group is warmed up and ready.
--> Lead-up Game[***Modified version equipment: flags/pinnies]
British BulldogAt one end of a playing space (yard, field) the players line up, facing the one player who is "it." "It" plays from the center of the field, and calls out "British Bulldog." The line of players then attempts to run from one end of the field to the other, while "it" tries to tackle other players. Tackled players then join "it's" team. The game proceeds back and forth across the field, each time more players are tackled. The winner is the last one standing, who then becomes "it" for the next game. Caution: this can be a very rough game, and is to be played on grassy or other soft surfaces.
[***modified version to be played in class]
At one end of a playing space (yard, field) the players line up, facing the one player who is "it." "It" plays from the center of the field, and calls out "British Bulldog." The line of players then attempts to run from one end of the field to the other, while "it" (or group of “it”) tries to pull the flag/pinny from other players; caught players then join "it's" team. The game proceeds back and forth across the field, each time more players have their flags/pinnies captured. The winner is the last one standing, who then becomes "it" for the next game.
--> SportBench SoccerEquipment: 2 standard wooden gym benches, 1 soccer ball, pinnies/flags
The same rules as normal soccer apply except players are required to score on a gym bench – making it more difficult and controlled (no hard/high shots). Opposing teams are required to score on each other’s goal (the bench). Passing is key; in order to move the ball up and down the field as is effective ball-handling. The ball is allowed to contact any body part except the upper extremities.
