PLATINUM PIED PIPERS
triple P
released fall 2005 on ubiquity
jay's rating:
*****

i heard about them on okayplayer but paid them no heed. i was at the record store the other day and told myself i had to absolutely buy a new album. whenever i say that, i find myself perusing the hip hop and electronic sections of the store - for a good 40 minutes when im alone, too, i might add.

luckily, nothing caught my attention that i couldn't easily download. luckily, i ventured into the r&b/soul section. i found this wonderful cd called "triple p" by the platinum pied pipers.

DO NOT SLEEP ON THESE GUYS.

as of late, i've been on this whole soulful, groove tip (see albums below that are heavily rotated).
i like good sounds and production. i like to hear things that are different; things that haven't been done.
as far as im concerned, show me your skills and i'll pay for your cd.

heavily rotated

i'll remind you, i never heard anything from them - not 1 song; not even an amazon 10 second sample; nothing.
but i had to get it for some reason. my gut instinct told me to get it. i got it.

i took it home and i haven't stopped listening to it since then. i hate to say it but this album is in contention for my best of 2005 list - right up there beside common's Be and nicolay's city lights - a list which i'll post next month (sometime before new years but after exams when i have the time).

if you like dwele, you'll like this. and if you liked the sound and feel of jazzy jeff's 'the magnificent' LP, then you'll have no problem getting into this. production on this is nuts!

detroit has what you need.
in the past it's been nyc and philly for me..but im slowly getting into detroit. detroit has been slept on for too long - believe me.

here's where you can start. thereafter, you can dive deeper and check out detroit's dwele, slum village, jay dee/jay dilla. you might even wanna check out some detroit techno. just stay away from D-12 if you can. what the heck, i love him, but stay away from eminem too, while youre at it (for now).

:: 6 degrees of separation::
one half of the platinum pied pipers - wajeed is a founding member of slum village. slum village is dope. slum village did a track called "tainted" featuring dwele. dwele is dope. dwele on his 'subject' LP had production by j-dilla aka jay dee. jay dee, aside from helping with production on 'Be', is currently common's housemate in los angeles (no, it's not a gay thing). jay dee also helped on spacek's new album (that was bonus for you, rj). all of this shit is the future!

if you like soul music and if you wanted some new soul with hip hop elements or rather, hip hop with a twist of soul, then BUY this album. do not sleep.

in brief terms, this cd will make you wanna throw on a leather jacket and cruise for the nite. shoot, you can even just chill with your lady listnening to this. you can even sleep to this. do whatever you want, just get off your computer and get it now.
